Not sure if this counts as "telling a scary story," since I didn't write it, but /u/Cymoril_Melnibone is on of my favorite internet authors, and she deserves more love in my opinion. I especially like An Open Letter to Reality Number 3, The Djinn Bottle (this one is kind of gross as a forewarning...), and Dragon's Teeth!

Trick or treat!!

There was this one time when I stayed at Cambridge University in the UK for an interview... I was the first to arrive out of all the candidates since I had to travel from another country, so they housed me in a new building. By new, I mean like 300 years old because the old building was 500 years old... For the first night, I was the only one in that building and it was like 5 degrees outside so I didn't dare to go out of my dorm room to go to the toilet. Probably a good thing because I heard spooky noises outside... it might just be the English wind, but better to be safe than sorry!


This is why I didn't pee for a whole night.

omg eon ;_; cambridge is super haunted, esp the little cobbly streets in the towns. i've stayed in cambridgeshire with a few friends and BOY that spooky feeling sure is ever present.

A spooky story? There's this Japanese modern urban legend (I say modern because it was born from the 2ch boards) about a cursed poem called "Tomiko's Hell" and it is very unsettling. They say that if you read that poem out loud, you die. There's also the legend of the "Kune-Kune" which is creepy because it's popular about rural areas in Japan and the origin itself is very spooky.

My grandad was walking over the bridge at the end of his street one day and he spotted a man standing looking over the railings and the railway track below. As my grandad approached, the man turned to stare at him and my grandad nodded a polite greeting and walked by. When he was several steps away, he heard footsteps behind him like the man had started to follow him and thought nothing of it, but when the pace started to pick up and the man broke into a run, my grandad balled his fist and made ready to swing at him.

When he was sure the man was just about to get him, he threw his fist around -- and immediately fell flat on his arse. There was no one there.
